Spermbanking May Now be Covered by Insurance in NY

There are many circumstances in which a man may want to preserve his fertility. For example, many cancer patients must undergo chemo therapy or other treatments that can affect their ability to produce sperm. A single man in his mid-30’s, who isn’t ready to have children yet, may want to ensure he has viable sperm if/when he does decide to have children in the future. Gay men who are waiting to find the right surrogate may also decide to preserve their healthy sperm while they can.

These fertility preservation options are life-changing, no matter the reason. And they give men reassurance for their future. Unfortunately, insurance companies have withheld money for these treatment options in the past, and they can be very expensive to pay for out of pocket. BUT Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature recently came together to make a big change in the lives of so many people around New York State.

They have just finalized New York’s 2020 budget, which provides for the coverage of all medically necessary fertility preservation procedures by ALL commercial insurers. It also provides in-vitro fertilization (IVF) coverage by large group health insurance plans. This extension of coverage marks a tremendous gain for cancer patients, survivors, and all New Yorkers who need these vital reproductive services to build their families. Read the press release. We suggest individuals contacting their own insurance carriers to determine specific coverage.
